PISTOL IS CASED IN A NICE REPRODUCTION HARDWOOD PARTITION CASE WITH BLUE FELT INTERIOR. THE ACTION IS CRISP AND THE TIMING IS GOOD WITH ALL THE NIPPLES INTACT AND THE SAFETY PINS ARE HAMMERED DOWN. THE LEFT GRIP HAS A STRONG CARTOUCHE, WHILE THE RIGHT IS FAINT BUT VISIBLE. SMOOTH WOOD GRIPS ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION SHOWING MARS AND A SMALL CHIP AT THE LEFT TOE. THE THREE SCREW FRAME IS CUT FOR STOCK AS IS THE BUTT. THE STRAPS ARE BRASS IN THE FRONT AND IRON IN THE REAR WITH ALL MATCHING VISIBLE SERIAL NUMBERS. THE CYLINDER RETAINS APPROXIMATELY 60%-70% OF THE LIGHTLY ROLLED NAVY SCENE WITH SIGNIFICANT MUTED CASE COLORING ON THE FRAME WITH NUMEROUS PROOFS AND ACCEPTANCE MARKS. THERE IS LIGHT PINPRICK PITTING ON LEFT SIDE OF THE BARREL. THE PISTOL RETAINS TRACES OF BLUE FINISH IN THE PROTECTED AREAS WITH THE REMAINDER HAVING GONE TO AN EVEN GRAY PATINA. THE PISTOL IS IN VERY GOOD OVERALL CONDITION WITH AN 8 INCH ROUND BARREL. THE PISTOL IS SERIAL NUMBER 89705 INDICATING MANUFACTURE IN 1863 AS CONFIRMED BY THE ACCOMPANYING COLT FACTORY LETTER. All of the serial numbers match on the metal with the wedge being a later replacement. The brass triggerguard has an ocher patina. The cylinder retains about 50% of the naval engagement scene with several small dings, all of the safety pins are worn flat as is common. All of the steel surfaces have an even dark patina with very good factory lettering, only the “Patent” marking on the frame is a little light at the bottom. The one-piece walnut grip is sound and shows wear, with small handling marks and tiny dings on the butt, and a faint outline of a government inspector’s cartouche on the left side. This is a standard revolver as procured for the Union and has several small inspectors’ initials on the metal. 44 with an 8″ round barrel having a dark bore with very good rifling.
